How Can I Delete a Remote Tag?

To delete a remote tag in Git, you need to push an empty reference to the remote tag. Here's how you can do it:

git push origin :<tagname>

Replace <tagname> with the name of the tag you want to delete.

For example, to delete a tag named v1.0, you would run:

git push origin :v1.0

After running this command, the specified tag will be deleted from the remote repository.

Note:

  • This command deletes the tag only on the remote repository. It doesn't remove the tag from your local repository. If you also want to delete the tag locally, you can use the git tag -d <tagname> command.
  • Be careful when deleting tags, especially if they have already been shared with others. Deleting a tag can cause confusion or problems for collaborators who rely on the tag.
  • Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to delete tags on the remote repository.
